The Determinants of Linear Order in Morphology and Syntax
We usually assume that the linear order of language is driven by the grammatical categories. This assumption is widely held in both syntax (e.g. SOV, Det N Adj) and morphology (e.g. N-Num-Case, V-Tns). However ordering may also deviate from this assumption, for example where words or morphemes have item-specific orderings that are not determined by grammatical category. Another type of deviation is found in variable ordering, i.e. xy ~ yx with no change of meaning, which may be driven by pragmatics and phonology, rather than grammatical category. In this talk I will examine the extent to which inflectional morphology conforms to category-based ordering. I will also discuss ways in which linear morphological ordering may be similar or different to syntax.
