The Voice and Silence of Divinity: A Socio-Cognitive Linguistic Approach to Religious Violence
This lecture presents a cognitive sociolinguistic approach (Van Dijk 2014) to religious violence with a focus on contemporary systems of anti-LGBTQ+ theo-political ideologies. Specifically through an exploration of case studies in ISIS propaganda, Neo-Conservative Christian movements, and extremist manifestos, an analytic model of religious experience and its linguistic realizations is developed with reference to Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff and Johnson 1980; Gibbs 2017) in which the experiential grounding of ineffable concepts is operationalized as a predictor of religious violence.
